FLIP-DISC DISPLAYS
FLIP-DOT CONTROLLERS
FLIP-DISC DISPLAY.
There are different types of flip disc displays, also known as flip dot displays, they differ in the design of the rotating discs and in size. However, the controls for flip disc displays are similar. On this page, I would like to focus on one selected type of flip dot displays, because I have experience with them and have already built some interesting projects based on these displays.
The flip disc display consists of a grid of small discs that are black on one side and a color on the other. The disc includes a permanent magnet and is attached to an axle which allows the disc to flip. Positioned close to the magnet is a solenoid. By pulsing the solenoid coil with the appropriate electrical polarity, the permanent magnet on the axle will align itself with the magnetic field, also turning the disc.
Electromechanical displays are a technology from the middle of the last century. Despite the fact that it is quite outdated technology, the displays are still produced and used, mostly as information boards e.g. in buses.
SOUNDS FROM THE PAST.
The distinctive sounds made by the flip-discs are unique. These repetitive sounds together with simple kinetics make it possible to build something “different”.
Mechanical displays are a rarity in the world of flat screens and miniaturization. The Flipo.io project will try to present flip-disc displays in a new way, combined with new technology and fresh ideas.
